Google Ads can make you money! It’s obvious, but some people miss this

Hello. This is Michael Byrd with Home Services Digital. And we’re on video, I believe it’s number 21—might be number 22—I will, I’ll get this corrected. It doesn’t really matter. We are going to start today on Google Adwords. And Google AdWords is a huge section. It’s a huge opportunity for you, and it’s definitely worth looking at very seriously. So we’re going to start with that today. I’m gonna try to take these in small bits so you understand it and to use more more visuals.

You don’t click on the ads. What does that have to do with anything?

Google AdWords is also known as pay-per-click. And I’m going to switch over to the screen here and start on showing somewhere. We’re talking about Google, the Google AdWords, the ads, are right here at the top. I’m gonna start with why a lot of business professionals dismiss this as an opportunity. The number one thing that I hear when we’re talking with people about getting business from search—plumbers, roofers, painters—is what the business owner does and you may be, probably, you might even beat me to this: “I never click on the ads. I never click on the ads.” or “I’ll always skip past the ads.” When you do a search you skip past the ads. You go down here to the so-called pure search, the organic search. You might do something in the Maps. You might feel OK about that, but you say you skip the ads. And I want to try to debunk this from a top-down perspective at the beginning, and then we’ll take some more microscopic views as to why these are worth doing.

The first thing I want to point out is that a lot of big companies do Google AdWords. And they’ve been doing Google AdWords since Google came on the scene, well, way back when, and innovated with this pay-per-click type of advertising. I’m gonna give you just a little bit of a sampling of the kind of folks that are doing Google AdWords, and make a lot of money doing it. They wouldn’t be doing it if they were just wasting money, OK? And they wouldn’t be doing it if nobody clicks on the ads. My belief is that, you know, this is just a theory: Business owners and other people maybe of my age who’ve come along as the Internet has come along—I’m pre-internet—so we got used to Google being the place we went to search when it emerged as the most prominent search engine. And we would skip the ads. So now that habit has stuck with us, but the ads work and if they didn’t work a lot of these big companies wouldn’t be doing them.

These big companies are onto something

All right, here’s just an idea: Amazon, About.com, Google spends on its own program, Target. There’s a list. Here’s another list: AT&T, Expedia, Priceline, Bank of America, Verizon, Chase, Capital One, Microsoft, etc. You may say, “OK, well, those are big companies.” I’m going to come back to the small companies, but AdWords works if it’s done correctly. We’re going to talk about “done correctly” also.

So are your competitors

The second big point about Google AdWords and whether or not it’s worth looking at is, well, let me just show you one other one other big company in a sense, big companies right where you live if you’re a plumber, if you’re a heating and air contractor. Big companies: Mr. Rooter.com. There’s one right there. Mr. Rooter, Ben Benjamin Franklin Wilmington.com, Roto-rooter. Good companies, tough competitors. They’re doing AdWords. They wouldn’t be doing it week after week, day after day, month after month if it didn’t work.

And this is how Google makes most of its money

All right, now, the second reason is (what is the second reason?). Oh, now, here’s another macroscopic view: Google is one of the largest companies in the world. They are certainly one of the largest companies on the internet. Maybe it’s the largest company. They say Google, Facebook, Apple—there’s one other one—Amazon. There’s some acronym that they put these four together, but those are the top four. Google’s definitely one of those top four, maybe the top. Where does Google make its money? Google makes its money overwhelmingly on Google AdWords. So that is some pretty heavy evidence that AdWords is worth doing. I pulled up this article right here because I want to show you: 97% of Google’s overall income in 2015. Now it’s 2018 right now. That’s a little bit of an old number. It’s a little bit hard to find some of these studies about that. But still, 97 percent not that long ago. You know, 2018 is only halfway over. Seventy-two billion dollars. Billion dollars! Newspaper advertising is dying. TV advertising is dying, OK? People don’t continue to spend money if it doesn’t work. Google advertising is growing.

All right, so we’re gonna talk in more detail in coming videos, but let’s just face facts: Google AdWords, Google pay-per-click advertising, those things at the top that maybe you skip: they actually work. And they can make you and your business a lot of money.
